How to Save Water During Summer: A Student Guide

1 min read • July 28 2026

As the weather gets warmer, it’s easy to use more water than usual without even realising you’re doing it. However, there are several small changes that you and your housemates can make over the summer months to save water and money.

Why Summer Water Habits Can Increase Your Bills

The warm weather can change how people use water at home, such as taking more showers and watering the garden and plants daily. Many people find they use more water than in the colder months, which can lead to higher household costs. These changes often occur gradually, so many households don’t notice an increase in their water usage until they take a look at their water bill.

Simple Ways to Save Water During Summer

Reduce Shower Time During Hot Weather

Many people shower more in the summer due to the hot weather, but this can increase your water bill. Shortening your showers by just a few minutes a day can help not only reduce your water bill, but your energy bill too. When it’s warm outside, take colder showers, as this can cool you down and save you money on your energy bill.

Avoid Half Loads in Washing Machines

Spending more time outside in the hot weather can lead to more outfit changes due to discomfort and sweat. When washing your clothes, make sure you wait until you have a full load, as running half loads can waste water and electricity. If you only have a small load, it can sometimes be helpful to combine laundry with housemates. Using eco settings can also minimise water and energy use.

Turn off Taps During Daily Routines

When brushing your teeth, shaving, or washing dishes, avoid letting the taps run continuously to save water. Try to turn the taps on only when you need to rinse something, and use a washing up bowl when cleaning dishes.

Collect Rainwater

Harvested rainwater can be used for tasks like watering plants, washing the patio and cleaning your car, reducing reliance on mains water. You can do this by placing a bucket, watering can, or other suitable container outside and waiting for it to fill with rainwater. Water your plants in the early morning or late evening, avoiding peak temperatures. This is because heat can cause water to evaporate more quickly, leading to water waste.

Fix Leaks and Dripping Taps

Even very small leaks can waste a lot of water over time, leading to higher water bills. Look for anything that could be a sign of a leak around areas like taps, toilets, and visible pipework to avoid wasting water. If you do find anything, let your landlord know. Make sure to check for leaks and dripping taps before winter, as cold temperatures can turn any existing issues into bigger ones.

Coordinate Usage With Housemates

If you’re on a metered tariff, you and your housemates can take steps to try and lower your water bill, such as taking shorter showers, running full loads in the washing machine, and fixing leaks. If you’re on an unmetered water tariff, saving water isn’t pointless, as using less hot water can help lower your energy bill. Talk to your housemates about what you can all do to save water as a team. If only one person makes an effort, it’s less likely to be effective.

What Happens to Water Bills When You’re Not in the House?

Some students go home during the summer, but this doesn’t mean that your household bills stop. You’ll still be responsible for fixed costs like broadband and rent. Even if you aren’t actively using water or energy, you’ll still be responsible for standing charges, which are fixed daily fees.
